seo on page

On page SEO or search engine optimisation is making sure that your website is as search engine friendly as possible. If your website is not optimised then you have less chance of getting good results in the search engines, here is a quick guide towards good on page SEO:
  • Make sure that all of your web pages can be indexed by search engines - make sure that they all have at least one link from somewhere on your site.
  • Make sure that you have unique content on every single page.
  • Make sure that your meta-tags are arranged correctly - your page title tags and description tags should describe the content of your different web pages. The page title tags should be less then 68 characters and the description tags more detailed but less then 148 characters.
  • Make sure you label the different headers on your web pages using H tags.
  • Make sure that your web page URLs are SEO friendly, use mod re-write for Linux and Apahche hosting or use IIS redirect for Windows. Ideally make it so that the URLs describe your content i.e. use domain.com/blue-widgets.php as apposed to having something like domain.com/product.php?cat=146. Use hyphens or underscores to separate words in the URLs.
  • Make sure that the links within your site are complete i.e. if you are linking to the blue widgets page link to domain.com/blue-widgets.php as apposed to just blue-widgets.php.
  • Make sure that you use descriptive URLs for your images i.e. use blue-widget.jpg as apposed a bunch of numbers and or letters .jpg.
  • Make sure that you label all of your images with descriptive alt attributes.
  • Make sure that you make good use of anchor text links within your content - if you have a page about blue widgets, use the phrase blue widgets in the text that links to it.
  • Make sure that there is only one version of your site - 301 redirect all non www. URLs to the www. ones or vice versa.
  • Make sure that there is only one version of your homepage - 301 redirect the index or default page back to domain.com.
  • Use the rel="nofollow" tag in the links to websites that you do not trust, you think maybe using spamming techniques or you do not want to help in the search engines.
  • Make sure that your code is valid, in some instances bad code can lead to search engines not being able to properly read a page. Use the W3C validator to check your markup.
If you follow these guidelines you are on your way towards good on page SEO and to good rankings in the search engines.

Image SEO

So far we spoke about title optimization, importance of heading tags, anchor text but we just mentioned images for once or twice.

Even tho the weight search engines give to optimized images is not heavy as the title tag it still does help us in our SEO Optimization venture to rank higher in the SERPs. I have seen many web masters avoid optimizing their images because they are not aware of it, or simply because they don’t think it is worth the time.

Well let me tell you, on one of my web sites I had a typo on the image alt tag, and on my stats i kept seeing organic traffic coming to my website with a typo word. I was like going mad and worried that I might have made a typo and maybe my business would not be taken serious. I kept digging deeper and deeper into the side and checking every single paragraph for the possible typo. It ended up that I had the typo on the image alt tag *shocking..no?*

Okey with that said I just wanted to show you that I have experienced and that image optimization DOES help. But now, lets see how to optimize a image (but not for image searches). I want to avoid image optimization for image searches since we want traffic to our content and not directly to our image.

Lets presume we have a search engine optimization website and we want to use a image logo instead of keywords in headings.

The next image is NOT what I would call optimized

    <img src=”logo.gif” width=”180″ height=”60″ />

Neither this is what I would call image optimization

    <img src=”logo.gif” width=”180″ height=”60″ alt=”Logo” />

While this is what I would call SEO optimized image

    <img src=”logo.gif” width=”180″ height=”60″ alt=”Search Engine Optimization (SEO)” />

Oh hold on, neither this is image optimization, actually this would be keyword spamming (and might harm you)

    <img src=”logo.gif” width=”180″ height=”60″ alt=”Search Engine Optimization (SEO), SEO Service, SEO Company, SEO Expert, SEO software, SEO Tools” />

Keep in mind, image alt tag can HELP us in SEO Optimization of our web site, but as any other tag that search engines read, it can harm our web site too if we abuse and over use it (avoid keyword stuffing).

Building Business Website

This time I'm going to talk a little about how to select a domain name that is right for your business.

If you already have a busy website and you like your domain there's no need to change it but as soon as you set up a new website or if you are going to rebrand your business with a new business name you need to consider carefully what domain name to choose.

For those of your who don't know the domain name is the base part of the address you type into the browser address bar to open a website. Like "google.com", "secretsearchenginelabs.com" or "cnn.com"

First of all you need to know what you are going to use the domain for. It could be any of the following.

* The website of your business.
* A niche website to make money from ads or selling a ebook
* A SEO website, like a feeder blog, that exist for the sole purpose of helping your business or niche website rank in the search engines.

Considering the different purposes a domain and website can have your might want to optimize your domain for some but not all of the following

* A short name that is easy to spell and that people will remember after they have heard someone mention it on the radio or if they read about it two days ago.
* A name the is built from the nr 1 keyphrase your are targeting with SEO
* A name that does not conflict with trademarks or business names already in use in your target market (or you could lose your domain to a trademark holder)
* A name you want to live with for many years (a lot of your marketing is tied to the domain name)
* A name without hyphens if possible
* A .COM or country specific domain for your business
* A .ORG or country specific domain for your organization

Building Your Business Website
When your select a domain name for your business, most of the time your want the domain name to be the same as the name of your business.

If you have a long or complicated business name it's usually best to select a domain name that is a short version of your business name, the name of a popular product you sell or a completely new name

Branding is important here and you want a short and memorable name that you remember from the radio or from a billboard.

Always go for a .COM or a country specific domain extension, like .CA or .CO.UK, for your business.

Use a country specific extension if the large majority of your customers are from a singly country. The country specific extension will help your search engine rankings in that country, but will reduce your rankings in the rest of the world. Many times a country specific extension will make your look more trustworthy in the local market.

Use a .COM extension of you sell to many countries and especially if you sell to the US. The United States country specific extension .US is not popular so avoid it and use .COM

There is a reason to not use .NET domains. Most people only remember the name part of the domain and automatically adds .COM when typing it into the browser address bar. This means you lose a percentage of visitors that go to the .COM domain instead, and if there is something interesting (perhaps a competitor) on the .COM domain they may never return to your hidden .NET business.

If you really want to have a .NET domain make sure to also register the .COM domain with the same name and redirect it the your .NET website. That way you don't lose the type in traffic that uses dot com by mistake.

The same goes for hyphens. Many times your visitors will not remember the hyphen when they type in your domain and you'll lose some visitors again.

Lets talk about domains for SEO and niche websites in a later newsletter.

Also remember to check out my list of best domain name registratin sites if you need a safe place to register your domains.

Metatag

What are meta tags? They are information inserted into the "head" area of your web pages. Other than the title tag  (explained below), information in the head area of your web pages is not seen by those viewing your pages in browsers. Instead, meta information in this area is used to communicate information that a human visitor may not be concerned with. Meta tags, for example, can tell a browser what "character set" to use or whether a web page has self-rated itself in terms of adult content.

Metatag example :

<head>
<meta name="description" content="Free Web tutorials" />
<meta name="keywords" content="HTML,CSS,XML,JavaScript" />
<meta name="author" content="Hege Refsnes" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1" />
</head>

Definition and Usage
Metadata is information about data.
The <meta> tag provides metadata about the HTML document. Metadata will not be displayed on the page, but will be machine parsable.
Meta elements are typically used to specify page description, keywords, author of the document, last modified, and other metadata.
The <meta> tag always goes inside the head element.
The metadata can be used by browsers (how to display content or reload page), search engines (keywords), or other web services.

SEO Keyword

Although you may not optimize your site for such keywords. SEO keyword learning is very important that you know what they are, as it applies to your site. As you work through this post, make a list of the 5-10 “major” keywords that describe your website. It's named SEO keyword learning.

SEO are the most important thing when we have a site, one of the worst mistakes that novices make is trying to focus on a single word or phrase for SEO keyword, and attempt to build a good website  that will rank well. Extremely general terms such as these are very competitive, difficult for search engines to handle well (in terms of giving good results to searchers), and hardly worth the trouble in the first place.

What I have done to most of my post titles is composing them from some keywords that usually searched by people. Maybe you ever found there are some titles that false to be said as a title. This might caused by I am not the expert in combining these keywords. But what you need to underlined is make your post title contained with multiple keywords.

Then the second is about writing your first page of your post. I am not forcing you to do this but I this is what I always do to my first line of my post. I rewrite my post title and combine it with the other word until appropriately, it become a sentence.

Automatic Reload Script

Using this tag you can have your page automatically refresh itself to the most current version, or change to another page entirely after a set number of seconds (a process known as ‘client pull’). This is useful if you've moved a page to a new url and want any visitors to the old address to be quietly sent to the new location.

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="5; url=newurl.html">

The number is the number of seconds to wait before changing to the new page. Setting it to 0 results in an instant redirect, but this isn’t recommended as it disables your readers’ Back buttons. This method of redirecting is ok, but a better solution is to use URL rewriting.

HTML Image

HTML The <img> Tag and the Src Attribute In HTML, images are defined with the <img> tag.
The <img> tag is empty, which means that it contains attributes only, and has no closing tag.
To display an image on a page, you need to use the src attribute. Src stands for "source". The value of the src attribute is the URL of the image you want to display.
Syntax for defining an image:
<img src="url" alt="some_text"/>
The URL points to the location where the image is stored. An image named "boat.gif", located in the "images" directory on "www.w3schools.com" has the URL: http://www.w3schools.com/images/boat.gif.
The browser displays the image where the <img> tag occurs in the document. If you put an image tag between two paragraphs, the browser shows the first paragraph, then the image, and then the second paragraph.

HTML The Alt Attribute
The required alt attribute specifies an alternate text for an image, if the image cannot be displayed.
The value of the alt attribute is an author-defined text:
<img src="boat.gif" alt="Big Boat" />
The alt attribute provides alternative information for an image if a user for some reason cannot view it (because of slow connection, an error in the src attribute, or if the user uses a screen reader).

Basic Notes - Useful Tips
Note: If an HTML file contains ten images - eleven files are required to display the page right. Loading images take time, so my best advice is: Use images carefully.
Note: When a web page is loaded, it is the browser, at that moment, that actually gets the image from a web server and inserts it into the page. Therefore, make sure that the images actually stay in the same spot in relation to the web page, otherwise your visitors will get a broken link icon. The broken link icon is shown if the browser cannot find the image.

The HTML noscript Element

The <noscript> tag is used to provide an alternate content for users that have disabled scripts in their browser or have a browser that doesn’t support client-side scripting.
The noscript element can contain all the elements that you can find inside the body element of a normal HTML page.
The content inside the noscript element will only be displayed if scripts are not supported, or are disabled in the user’s browser:

<script type="text/javascript">
document.write("IRENG BLOG")
</script>
<noscript>Sorry, your browser does not support JavaScript!</noscript>

The HTML script Element

The <script> tag is used to define a client-side script, such as a JavaScript.
The script element either contains scripting statements or it points to an external script file through the src attribute.
The required type attribute specifies the MIME type of the script.
Common uses for JavaScript are image manipulation, form validation, and dynamic changes of content.
The script below writes IRENG BLOG! to the HTML output:

 <script type="text/javascript">
document.write("IRENG BLOG!")
</script>

Metatag For Keyword

The HTML meta Element Metadata is information about data.

Keywords for Search Engines
Some search engines will use the name and content attributes of the meta element to index your pages.
The following meta element defines a description of a page:
<meta name="description" content="Free Web tutorials on HTML, CSS, XML" />
The following meta element defines keywords for a page:
<meta name="keywords" content="HTML, CSS, XML" />
The intention of the name and content attributes is to describe the content of a page.
Note: A lot of webmasters have used <meta> tags for spamming, like repeating keywords (or using wrong keywords) for higher ranking. Therefore, most search engines have stopped using <meta> tags to index/rank pages.

Edit Metatag Title (Title Optimization)

The TITLE element (not Title Tag as many call it, but will be using the phrase “title tag” in this SEO article for SEO reasons) of your web page (found within the HEAD) is very important, probably the most important part of a page (especially for placement in Google and Yahoo) and should ideally be SEO optimized for a small number of keywords or key phrases (preferably just the one main phrase for that page).

The exact number of keywords, keyword density** and keyword proximity is dependent on a number of SEO factors including the difficulty of the keyword phrases, the PageRank (PR) of the page, if you have control of the backlinks and anchor text to that page (so you can change the anchor text of the links) and the age of sites backlinks (older backlinks means it’s easier for that site to rank well).

Edit Metatag Title (Title Optimization)
Edit Metatag Title (Title Optimization)

** There is no SEO evidence adding a keyword two or more times to a title element will increase the SEO benefit for that keyword. For this reason it is advisable to only add a keyword once unless it makes sense from a user or keyword proximity perspective: for example for keyword proximity reasons a title like “SEO Tutorial – SEO Title Optimization” is better than “SEO Tutorial – Title Optimization” IF your main SERP is “SEO Title Optimization”.

As a general rule of thumb when it comes to the title tags less is better than more as it concentrates the SEO benefit of the title over less keywords.

Example – This web page SEO Services is optimized primarily for the phrase SEO Services and a few related SEO terms including SEO Quote, SEO Expert, SEO Consultant and various phrases including the keyword SEO.

We could of stuffed the TITLE element with all of these keyword phrases i.e. -

<TITLE>SEO Services – Consultant SEO Expert Services</TITLE>

Or even a list of phrases like this as the title tag-

<TITLE>SEO Services – Consultant SEO, SEO Expert, SEO Consultant</TITLE>

Instead we Optimized the Title as-

<TITLE>SEO Services</TITLE>

We decided to use the short title element because this concentrates SEO benefit from the title element to that single two word phrase. Since Search Engines like Google rate the contents of the title tag as important you ideally want THE most important phrase for that page on its own.

There are exceptions to this loose rule, if you have a very small web site and lots of keyword phrases you wish to target, you have little choice, but to double or even triple up your titles keywords.

Also if you have high PR pages (i.e. PR6) and are having no problems keeping the main phrase for those pages, you could experiment by adding further highly relevant search phrases to the title tag. Take care not to over do it, what you do today may not show full effect for several months. For example if you added an extra phrase and 4 weeks later your main SERPs had not dropped, so you add another phrase, you might not see the negative effects of the first change for a couple more months. You may find 3 or 4 months after the first change loosing the pages main previously stable SERP!

When making changes to a successful page err on the side of caution, SEO is a very long term process and requires a lot of patience. If you are taking a risk (like adding more phrases to a title element) give the page at least 2 months and preferably 3 before deciding if it was successful or not. If a recent change results in a major drop in SERPs seriously consider reverting to the original page, but be aware what you see today might be the result of what you did 3 months ago or could be a coincidence, the search engine may of changed it’s algorithm (check the forums for reports of big changes) or some links to your site have been removed or changed.
Visitor Needs vs. Search Engine Optimization

As with all aspects of web site design don’t forget your visitors needs, some keyword phrases aren’t descriptive enough to use alone as a title tag, what you put in the title element is the text searches will see when they see a listing for your page in a Search Engines Results Pages (SERPs). If it doesn’t appeal to your potential visitors they will not click through to your sites listing! This is precisely why the title tag of this page is SEO Tutorial – Title Optimization and not just Title Optimization. The former (SEO Tutorial – Title Optimization) tells a potential visitor this page is part of an SEO Tutorial, the latter (Title Optimization) does not.
Quick SEO Tip – note above how rather than writing “The former tells a potential visitor this page is part of a Tutorial, the latter does not.” we added the important keywords “SEO Tutorial – Title Optimization”, “SEO” and “Title Optimization”. Being long winded is a prerequisite to good SEO copywriting!

In conclusion what you put between the <TITLE> and </TITLE> element is very important so try to get it right.
